A video press briefing on the IPCC AR5 report held on Saturday October 18, 2014 with a number of nigerian environmental journalists in Lagos and Abuja briefed by Prof. Olukayode Oladipo, renowned climate change expert and scientist, a CSO/NGO practitioner – Kaisa Kosonen of Greenpeace and a media practitioner – Alister Doyle of Reuters. Christine K of Heinrich Boell Foundation also joined from Abuja.

Prof. Oladipo gave insights on the AR5 (IPCC’s Fifth Assessment Report) and related reports and their implications to Nigeria and the developing world. Answering a question on climate change skepticism, Prof. Oladipo said, “Its better to believe in hell to discover you were right, than not to believe to discover you were wrong.Same with Climate change.”

While Kaisa, Greenpeace lead on the AR5, who has been to all the three Working Group, made a presentation on climate change impacts titled “Climate Change Reality Check”, Alister shared his experience in covering the IPCC, finding stories and angles that work for an outlet like Reuters. For Alister, “Coverage of IPCC assessment report should be about people and how climate change is impacting on health, farming.”

It was an engaging time for participating journalists eager to improve on their knowledge of the issues and their reportage, for the good of the planet.
